Title: Location Collaboration
Post by: Rika84 on 05:22 PM, 10/31/17
UPDATE #2
Hey guys! Please post your character/summary info over in the Masterlist thread! Let's see if we can trim this down to just locations and times.

Okay! This is the Location Collaboration thread. Big thanks to Lavecki for running the events thread and helping to collect/organize info!

Please post things like this:
Unit #xx is going to be at PLACE on DATE at TIME. Describe what can be seen/heard/smelled/sensed at this time and any relevant details.
So people can NOTICE YOU!

REMEMBER: Collaboration doesn't have to result in a big event, or even dialog! It can be as simple as dedicating a single sentence to noticing another character's actions or presence.
"Subtlety is king, detail is queen, and less is always more."

The People List
"#5 is a small family, father in his late 50's and two sons one in his early 20's the other high school age, the father reeks of tobacco smoke and is clearly a backwoods hunter of a sort, the elder son obviously follows in the footsteps as well but the younger son seems a bit...off.  They would be recognized as the males of the Huxley family to any locals, they are well known for heading out of town and hunting in the Rockies several times a year and this time of year is right around when they would be going for the last time."
they'll be visiting their unit at the crack of dawn on the 12th and will stay until about noon, the two sons will be checking out the stars and bards sometime around 9 or 10 while their dad has a pipeful in the units. the whole family will be popping into the Tex-Mex restaurant around 11 and finally the consignment store right around noon before they drive off out of town to the west.

"Unit #6 here.  He is a microwave engineer who would is on a specific mission and has to talk with only a couple key individuals.  Still, he will be at whatever common cafe there is in town in his off-time, drinking coffee.  Although is from out of town, he was born and raised in Havre for about 9 years. He will be checking in to the Super 8 in room 202 at 3 PM on October 10th, leaving on the 14th. [Post] (http://toospooky.com/fleming-storage-units-wips/location-collaboration/msg2599/#msg2599)

"Unit 11 ... went to the wedding on the 9th, ... did some hangover recovery on the 10th, and [present papers to storage facility] on the morning of the 11th. They are eventually going to Marg Madness in the evening of the 11th or 12th depending on if I want or need the story to last 2 days. The niece, Mary Ann, is going to the Stars and Bards sometime around noon to mid-afternoon on the 11th." [Post] (http://toospooky.com/fleming-storage-units-wips/location-collaboration/msg2392/#msg2392)

"FSU-13 here... Surely out of town and surely being sliiiightly odd. Comes to retrieve inherited stuff from her late grandmother's storage, who was a Harve resident a few years or so. Her house is sold now and most of the current owner's belongings are in FSU-13." [Post] (http://toospooky.com/fleming-storage-units-wips/location-collaboration/msg2324/#msg2324)

#17 will be bringing some 80's toys (GI Joe, Ninja Turtles, My Little Pony, Pound Puppies) in to Stars and Bards on the 11th! [Post] (http://toospooky.com/fleming-storage-units-wips/location-collaboration/msg2405/#msg2405)

"Unit #23's character is an out-of-towner who will be staying in a hotel. Looking for at least one other character to stay in the same hotel to share some kind of experience." (That's me. ^_^)

"35: The unit is actually owned by Shannon Gorski, and Mr. 35 (Michael Danvers) is helping her by clearing it out after she was wheelchair bound by an automotive accident last month. He's not thrilled about it, but he is curious." Staying at the Super 8. "He drives a 1978 Chevy pickup truck (white on red motif, you know the one) which he inherited from his uncle." [Definitely see Post for details on that truck!] [Post] (http://toospooky.com/fleming-storage-units-wips/location-collaboration/msg2373/#msg2373)
Getting a room at the Super 8 at ~7 p.m., Thursday the 12th. Protag will be carrying two moderately sized cardboard boxes, and will likely look a little road-weary.
Unless it's already claimed, I'll take room 119, which would put that trio (tall woman and two annoying children) next door in room 121.
Will leave the hotel on Friday the 13th, a little after 10 a.m., carrying the same boxes. Will arrive at the storage units around 11 a.m.

"39 is from out of town, but his mother lives in town on a farm just outside the town. He might swing by the Lantern Buffet on the 12th, but it's really up in the air right now." [Post] (http://toospooky.com/fleming-storage-units-wips/location-collaboration/msg2318/#msg2318)
"Unit 39 will definitively be going to Lantern at 4pm on the 12th, he'll be seeing a redheaded woman rush out before she gets any food at 4:30 pm. She'll have dropped a $20 on the table before leaving."

"This is unit 40 here, my guys a local who works at the local hospital. Probably going to Marge Madness on the 10th" [Post] (http://toospooky.com/fleming-storage-units-wips/location-collaboration/msg2410/#msg2410)

"Unit #44 here. A 27-year-old woman from Powell, Wyoming ... Gonna grab a drink at Marg Madness on the 11th after 6:00 pm, hit the hay at the Super 8, then play some Street Fighter at Stars & Bards the next morning before leaving Havre." [Post] (http://toospooky.com/fleming-storage-units-wips/location-collaboration/msg2411/#msg2411)

"Unit 49 here. My character is an 18-year-old girl who lives just outside of town. She will be at the unit from 2:30 to 6:00 on the 10-13 and was there all day on the 14. ... My main character drives a royal blue mini van with her sister and brother. Her friend's dad drives a black and red pick-up truck with this friend. After they are done most knights they dicide to go to the Latern buffet. So, if you want to run in to them you know whair." [Post] (http://toospooky.com/fleming-storage-units-wips/location-collaboration/msg2413/#msg2413)

"Hello, neighbor, 51 here. Although you might not see my guy, he's getting there on the 10th and wants to get everything cleared out as soon as possible. Might be gone by the time you get there." [Post] (http://toospooky.com/fleming-storage-units-wips/location-collaboration/msg2361/#msg2361)

"Number 52: A bearded man of about 40 in a brown leather jacket will drive a fairly beaten-up but well maintained white van up to the unit at about noon on the 13th." [See Post for more Details] [Post] (http://toospooky.com/fleming-storage-units-wips/location-collaboration/msg2358/#msg2358)

"I'm #60 and there will be two people (a couple) who recently moved to this town from the town over. They're currently both working and planning on getting married sometime next year. I'd be happy to interact with other people in any way. Also my storage container has old childhood memorabilia in it (drawings, photos, home movies, old toys/stuffed animals, etc.)"[Post] (http://toospooky.com/fleming-storage-units-wips/location-collaboration/msg2343/#msg2343)

"Unit #64 belonged to my character's older brother who moved to Havre around 2005 to work at the Too Close For Comfort archeological site after college.  ...  At some point she'll be visiting Hopper's Firearms." "Unit 94, Old Punk who is fairly friendly but rough and not one to censor herself. Smokes a lot and is very into the cheap margaritas at Marg Madness, came with a cousin who bails on her almost instantly and is staying at the cheapest motel she can find." [Post] (http://toospooky.com/fleming-storage-units-wips/location-collaboration/msg2321/#msg2321)

I'm looking for a more "chain" hotel that someone unfamiliar with the area would feel safe staying in, Secoura. I was thinking of looking to see what hotels are in the area in the coming days. At the least, I'd like something noisy to happen in the hotel that would break my character's concentration. Not sure whether you or someone else wants to create a detailed incident, but that would also be welcome. Just as long as more than one person hears something in the hotel.

Quebec, I'll add "cheap motel" to the first post in case anyone else would like to stay in the same place. Sounds like a great place for weird stuff to go down!

Just Googled hotels in Havre, there's quite a few and a couple are cheap. Did you want me to post the link here or send it through DMs?

A chain motel is where my character would stay.  Someplace she can lay her head at night without worry that someone will break into the car and find the murder weapon...I mean, steal any of her belongings.

Please do post a short list here! Other writers may want to pick a different hotel than I do. I appreciate the help!

The Super 8 hotel in Havre will be added to the list. [Website] (https://www.wyndhamhotels.com/super-8/havre-montana/super-8-havre/overview?CID=LC:SE::GGL:RIO:National:03753&iata=00065402#section-title-6ea5bce7)

@Secoura; I hadn't considered a motel. I'll look at my options for a bit. "Chain motel" added to the top.

Wanted:
This is Dan from Unit 17! If anyone has a broken or unneeded clothes dryer in their unit, available for the 13th or early the 14th, I'd be willing to take it off your hands. I need the drum belt... We can work out a dialogue exchange to be used in either or both stories if needed.

EDIT: nevermind x3

Adding peoples' descriptions and post links to the first post in numerical order so we can get an idea of who everyone is!

For those going the cheapest motel route, if you want to use a real location, it looks like the Hi Line Motel (20 2nd St, Havre, MT 59501) might be your best bet. Prices aren't given, but it seems to be the one with the most "meh" reviews. Otherwise, feel free to create your own fictional "cheapest motel"!

I don't see any obviously "chain" motels, just independents... The cheap end of chain hotels is that Super 8, and there are a couple Best Westerns for those who feel like paying Best Western prices.
Thoughts, you out-of-towners?

Number 52: A bearded man of about 40 in a brown leather jacket will drive a fairly beaten-up but well maintained white van up to the unit at about noon on the 13th. He will have a brief conversation with one of the cops, who seems to know him, and then spend the next three hours loading the contents of the unit directly into his van, stopping sometimes to inspect the contents of various boxes inside his vehicle. The last thing he loads will be what looks like a metal bed frame, which he tries to keep covered with a tarp that was in the unit. He will smoke constantly and will not want to talk to anyone. He used to live around these parts, but its doubtful anyone would recognise him now, except the cops, who know what's in the unit.

The conversation with the cop thing may not happen. I just noticed that there's a new document that specifies the police characters, and none of them fit. Kind of annoyed, trying to argue it in email now. I could move the day; I want to have the viewpoint character have a sort-of-cryptic conversation with someone at the start of the story who knows about a horrible thing that happened to his mother in 1995 that will set up some of the details, but all the cops are too young. I might be able to work something out though, with one of them passing on something from a retired cop.

My character will be staying at the Best Western Plus Great Northern Inn.  Prices be damned, they have a section for pets so Mr. Whiskers can join on the trip.

Unit #64 belonged to my character's older brother who moved to Havre around 2005 to work at the Too Close For Comfort archeological site after college.  He died in 2015 in an early morning car crash and my character took over the payments on the storage unit rather than have to go there and face disposing of his belongings.  At some point she'll be visiting Hopper's Firearms.

I'm in #35.

The unit is actually owned by Shannon Gorski, and Mr. 35 (Michael Danvers) is helping her by clearing it out after she was wheelchair bound by an automotive accident last month. He's not thrilled about it, but he is curious.

Michael has a mop of shortish, unstyled brown hair, and wears a North Dakota State University (NDSU) sweatshirt over blue jeans and ten year old Chuck Taylors. He is of paler complexion, and the darkest part of his eyes are the bags hanging under them. If approached, he will no doubt look at you like he barely speaks your language until he knows for certain what you're talking about.
Everything playing out in front of him seems to irritate Michael just a bit, but he's a good sport most of the time.

Michael will arrive late (4 or 5 o'clock) on Thursday the 12th, and will stay until asked to leave by the chubby officer. He drives a 1978 Chevy pickup truck (white on red motif, you know the one) which he inherited from his uncle. This truck bears North Dakota license plates featuring a backdrop image of the sunrise over badlands, a bison wearing a somewhat quizzical expression to the right, and the legend "Peace Garden State" to the left. Michael's uncle was a Pac-Man fanatic in his youth, and saddled his nephew with a vanity plate which reads "Pac Atk".
On Thursday the 12th, the truck will be parked in front of 'Space For Rent' (just to the right of the Fleming Plaza parking entrance) until closing time, and will likely be in front of unit 35 itself on Friday the 13th.

At least the night of the 12th will be spent at the Super 8 hotel (the one with the ugly purple and green linens). I'm going to go ahead and take the initiative to say that while their continental breakfast is wide and varied in its fair, it's also not very good (stale cereals, sweating danishes, warm fruit juice).
I'll be putting a few people in the room next door: a tall, thin, bespectacled woman with curly blonde hair, and her two children aged ~6 and 9. While the lot of them are reasonably quiet, the children will not shut the hell up about the hotel's lack of pool.

Michael will refuse any help with his unit...because it isn't actually his and you're a liability. No offense.

Sorry if that's a lot to parse through.

I'm sure it wouldn't be a big deal to add the cop that you need. If you only need this character for the one scene, perhaps this older cop just stopped by to chat with their fellow officers and check on the situation for a little while. =) It sounds like an interesting setup and there's got to be a way to do it.

@Secoura
Heck yeah, Mr. Whiskers! I was hoping somebody would have a pet along. I'm so glad you found this out about the Best Western!

@Bosencaine
That's an excellent amount of detail! Someone is bound to notice that truck.

I've got word-of-god there wouldn't be any other on-duty cops there, and it doesn't quite work if it's just a retired cop poking his nose in; the main character didn't let anyone know when he'd be coming, and it's not the kind of encounter the older cop would hang around for three days waiting for. Could just make it a coincidence, of course, but that doesn't help the realism.

What I'm thinking is that I'll rewrite it so that it's a conversation with the Deputy Scherker character who went fishing a few times with the old cop and wrung some details out of him. That actually helps keep things tighter because I can skip having to explain why the old cop moved from the Sheriff's department to the City PD. It makes the old cop a less sympathetic character (because he'd talk to others about what happened), but he only had to be sympathetic so the viewpoint character would reasonably talk to him. I think I've got this one done.

So, Deputy Scherker having a quick conversation with the man at about noon on the 13th...

Unit 11 here. I want to say I'm going to be the niece of Marge Erikson and they went to the wedding on the 9th, (before the allotted time to get things started) did some hangover recovery on the 10th, and Marge had to show the police the paperwork and told them that she was the owner of the unit and allowing her family to move things out for her on the morning of the 11th. They are eventually going to Marg Madness in the evening of the 11th or 12th depending on if I want or need the story to last 2 days. The niece, Mary Ann, is going to the Stars and Bards sometime around noon to mid-afternoon on the 11th.

Dan from Unit 17 here - On October 11th at about noon I'm going to be taking some old toys from the unit to Stars and Bards to see if they're worth anything. If you're interested in 80's toys (GI Joe, Ninja Turtles, My Little Pony, Pound Puppies) and happen to be there, or see me walking to or from the plaza with the box we can have a short interaction :)

Number 49 here.  My main character Connie goes there every night from the 10th to the 13th and will be there all day on the 14th if there is still stuff to get. She comes there every day with her 14-year-old brother Tom, her 10-year-old sister Jean, her friend Emily, and her friends dad Ronald.  Ronald drives a royal blue  mega cab pick up truck. The truck also has a bed extender. They will eat most nights at the lantern buffet and might go to the Tex-Mex restaurant.   The unit will mostly have toys, comics, and movies so the consignment shop in comic shop will be visited. You can expect to see Connie‘s mother and father at  12:30 on the 10th. They will be selling guns, hunting supplies, and lawn equipment along with some power tools. You can also expect to see the family on the night of the 10th around 630 at the comic shop.  They will also be at the lantern Buffet  at 7 PM. Other locations and times are unknown as of this moment.

Unit #88 here. Kim, a former resident of Havre, returning to his home town to help his cousin "Teach" finally go through his deceased parents storage unit.

He will be attempting to stay in the hotel the night of the 13th but ends up not doing so.

The father was a well known artist for tabletop and card games and the duo may be looking into stopping into the gaming store on either the 11th or 12th to get rid of some items from the unit.

hey there Unit 105 here my two characters are out of towners who are actually just stopping by on their way to a convention. My narrator character is originally from the south so you'll see her constantly wondering around to keep warm. The unit originally belonged to her dead estranged father. The rest of her family didn't know about it till the notice came. Her companion is her roommate and business partner Raphael who's very tall and Hispanic in origin. They'll definitely want to stay at a cheep hotel but their priority is getting out in a timely manor. They'll go to Marg Madness often. There from the tenth to the twelfth

Once outside, Gregg from Stars and Bards yells to him "Thanks again for that Blowtorch! I've got a bit of a bidding war going on here for him!" (Blowtorch is a G.I. Joe figure.) Getting a room at the Super 8 at ~7 p.m., Thursday the 12th.

Much as I try, I can't seem to find an actual layout or blueprint of the Super 8, but I assume they have elevators, and that the 100s aren't on the ground floor. Am I wrong in this?

(Also, thanks so much for collecting all this information. You've made my job so much easier.)

#5 is a small family, father in his late 50's and two sons one in his early 20's the other high school age, the father reeks of tobacco smoke and is clearly a backwoods hunter of a sort, the elder son obviously follows in the footsteps as well but the younger son seems a bit...off.  They would be recognized as the males of the Huxley family to any locals, they are well known for heading out of town and hunting in the Rockies several times a year and this time of year is right around when they would be going for the last time.

they'll be visiting their unit at the opening of the storage units on the 12th and will stay until about 3 or 4, the two sons will be checking out the stars and bards sometime around 10-11 while their dad has a pipeful in the units. the whole family will be popping into the Tex-Mex restaurant around 1 and finally the consignment store right around before they drive off out of town to the west.

Edited cause I forgot they don't open til ten

I missed the part where you asked if the 100s were on the ground floor!
Most of the hotels I've stayed at, the 100s are the ground floor, 200s are the second floor, etc.
So most of the rooms taken so far are assumed to be on the ground floor.

Hey #31, my unit is 4 down from you, would your character be willing to accept help from a neighbor?  Roland is really outgoing, but as the week is going on, he is struggling more and more with being alone - he'll be looking for people to chat with and help.

At exactly 4:38 PM on Friday October 13th there will be a gunshot heard. This will be outlined in my story "#20: Ingenuous Ingenious". As part of this I need to know what anyone who will be within earshot is doing just before the shot is heard.

If anyone will be around for this, please post in this thread (http://toospooky.com/fleming-storage-units-wips/important-event!/)!

Most of the hotels I've stayed at, the 100s are the ground floor, 200s are the second floor, etc.
So most of the rooms taken so far are assumed to be on the ground floor.

Oh, shoot...in that case, I think I'll have to change my claimed rooms to 219 and 221, one floor up. It's kind of important that I have an elevator separating my main character from the real world.
Sorry about that.

No problem! I'm just glad we caught it.

@Bosencaine
I missed the part where you asked if the 100s were on the ground floor!

Sorry for the confusion!

@Deerpoob
Just so you know, the storage units aren't open "at the crack of dawn"!
The facility opens at 10am, and the sun will be well up by then.

Ya I missed that detail or maybe I just got caught up in the vision of the dawn and forgot, fixed it!

I'm putting a receptionist behind the check-in desk of the Super 8 hotel on the morning of Friday the 13th.

He's a young man, about 6' tall or a hair under, and well groomed but with obviously lightened hair. He has greenish hazel eyes, a tight / narrow mouth, athletic build, and is named Mitchell. Mitchell's a friendly sort, like he hasn't had the youthful joie de vivre choked out of him yet. Mitchell takes his job very seriously; he does not slouch, and is likely to overuse "sir" and "ma'am" when he speaks. Mitchell probably should have joined the Navy.

I'm imagining this guy as a lifeguard who's had to find off-season employment indoors, but that's just the studio note character motivation I'm playing with...not a hidebound backstory or anything.

Unit 82:
He's a relatively average man, hazel eyes, black hair, three days worth of scruff and bundled up like a florida-boy. Every morning he is waiting on the dot by his truck for management to open the facility so he can get his shit taken care of. keeps to himself, stays from open to close packing up rotted and deformed wooden caricatures.

Also, he takes a long lunch from 1-2:30 everyday to go to Marg's and get a little intoxicated with the town drunkard, Mr. Jenkins, who spends his time loudly commiserating his shitty ex wife and his shitty life now that she took everything in the divorce.

Unit #91.

91, Max, has anxiety and a phobia of large bodies of water following the death of his father. He's trying to do this quickly, because it's freaking him out a little, and he's tired from pulling two graveyard shifts at his warehouse job this week.

Max will be pulling up to Unit #91 just after 11am on Friday, the 13th, after speaking to Officer Gilroy at the gate. Max will begin having a panic attack (silence, collapsing to ground, shuddering), clutching a clock that looks like a life preserver, at ~11:50am. Twenty minutes later, Deputy Scherker will notice him and ask if he is okay, before lumbering off to get Gilroy. Around 12:30pm, Gilroy wll drag Max from the unit and he will leave soon after.

Times and Locations for Unit 126
(126 will have bluetooth headphones in while cleaning out the unit so softer sounds (someone close talking to them self, others music, and people saying hello from a few feet away)  wont be noticed, but loud ones/people yelling close by will be noted.)
126 rolls into town around 8:30 -9 am and realizes she’s too early, she parks on the street and opens the back of her 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor to show she has a few pillows and blankets in the back, she closes the hatch and sits there until 10 when the units open.
Around 12:30-1 pm
After cleaning out half of the unit, 126 goes to rest and receives a call from her friend while eating from an open thermos, after ending the call she sets the open thermos on the ground near her car,  grabs a  energy drink out of a travel cooler and some medicine from the front of her car and starts cleaning the rest of the unit out.
At 3:30-4 pm
126 is finished, people near unit 126 might notice her closing her back hatch and getting visibly upset at someone who shes talking to on her phone, the conversation will end and after a few smaller actions 126 then closes her unit and drives off.

You might want to e-mail in about that. It probably depends on when it happened.

Unit 105 here! the people coming for their unit are both people in their 20s with colored hair.
Billie is an African american woman with her hair in the natural style of dreadlocks that are black with lavender mixed in between. They are short in length and stop right above the base of her neck. Bundled up in a long grey pea-coat and wearing knee high black leather boots.
Her companion Raphael is a Hispanic man with his short curly hair dyed silver at the top and left black on the sides. Notably tall and also wearing a fancy black pea-coat with a scarf.
They arrive early on the 13th and leave early on the 14th. They'll stay at the super 8 and will think the place is pretty decent given they've stayed in much worse places. Billie has a very pronounced Southern accent and tends to speak in a voice that carries very well.

I'm unit 9. At 442 PM my main character, a tall lanky guy will run out of his unit, slam it shut, and run to his ford ranger He will be clammy and scared. He will talk to no one.
